This is Tony Stark. He's a billionaire playboy genius philanthropist with a literal metal heart. The arc reactor keeps him alive, but in order to feel alive, he needs to feel useful, feel challenged, be in motion. Tony could get anyone in bed but has virtually no ability to connect with people emotionally, though to be fair he really has been working on that. It's just that a constant stream of one liners and snark and technobabble comes out of his mouth. He projects an air of total confidence while actual having some very real insecurities, and then there's his vices.

This Tony Stark is slightly AU. All the major events of the MCAU happen as specified, it's just that his vice of choice isn't drinking now. In part he never ended up drinking because hi, daddy issues, and he didn't want to be his father. Another contributing factor was drinking hindered productivity and post building the first suit of armor the casual drinking he did at parties no longer seemed like a suitable use of time. Genius inventor, you'll recall, are two traits that don't lend themselves well to normal fun-having, although he's Tony Freaking Stark and can keep up appearances like no one else and legitimately drank his sorry ass off when he thought he was dying.

But nowadays, since he's not really able to do the playboy thing with the glowing chunk of metal in his chest and his mental health is just as shaky as ever, Tony's vice of choice is self harm. He's smart enough to calculate damages and treat himself. He's got this under control. He's Tony Stark, he has everything under control. Other people just need to mind their own damn business. He's not some teenager in a Hot Topic T-shirt with a razorblade. He's a genius. He's got this.
